Structural steel fabricators use merchant bars to build several different products. They come in flats, rounds, steel angles, squares, strips, channels – almost any form. A merchant bar is generally used in structural applications that involves welding, bending, punching and forming and are commonly found in floor and roof joists, walkways and railings.
Flat, square, angled and round are the most common merchant bar types used in steel fabrication.
Flat Bar
Flat bars are flat steel sections used by fabricators for everything from construction and mining infrastructure to transport and storage. Size varies greatly.
Square Bar
Square bars (or ‘squares’) are solid square steel sections. Sizes range from 10mm upwards. Applications include door frames, ornamental architecture and balustrades.
Round Bar
Round (or ’rounds’) bars are solid circular steel sections. Sizes can range from just a few millimetres to thick metal bars. As such, applications can range from tent pegs to car axles.
Angled Bar
Angled bars can either be equal or unequal. Both are right-angled; however, unequal sections have different sized axis’ making them L-shaped. This section is much stronger (up to 20%), with a much higher strength to weight ratios. They are available in a wide range of lengths and sizes.
