Here we take a look at the steel delivery and steel installation process, and the tools and techniques involved. If you have any questions regarding a project, please don’t hesitate to get in touch!

The Steel Delivery and Installation Process

A lot goes into the delivery and erection of steel components. Steel fabricators must be thorough and meticulous with their planing to ensure everything runs smoothly, because a misstep at any point can mean expensive delays or potentially undermine the safety and integrity of the project.

The process involves:

Preparation – Ensuring that steel components arrive on site ready to be installed, which includes everything from protective coatings being applied to holes being drilled ready for erection.

Practice – Trial assemblies are sometimes carried out by steel fabricators at the plant prior to delivery (especially when it comes to complex projects) as this will ensure that each component will fit together exactly as planned.

Timing – Having the steel components you need exactly when you need them is vital to a project running smoothly, as this will avoid costly delays that can arise from waiting for components to be delivered. The same goes for if they are delivered too soon.

Delivery – Organisation is essential; every component must be delivered with any necessary clips, bracing and other connection materials required for installation otherwise costly delays can result.

Installation – Erection/installation can usually be split into four main components: making sure the foundations are safe, stable, and ready for erection; lifting and placing sections into position (see below); alignment; and finally, bolting everything into place.

Steel Installation Techniques

Most of the time, structural steel installation requires the use of cranes and MEWPs (Mobile Elevating Work Platforms). Cranes are used to lift the steel sections into place (these include with mobile and non-mobile cranes, depending on the project0), whereas MEWPs are used for workers to stand on in order access the section and bolt it into place.

The framework of a building supports everything from load bearing columns to the distribution of weight across floor space, and it is very important that erection is well-planned and meticulously executed.

Risks Involved With Steel Installation

Steel erection requires specialised skills and qualifications to reduce the risks involved with the procedure. According to Safe Work Australia, some of the main risks include:

  • A risk of a person falling more than two metres
  • Structural alterations or repairs requiring temporary support to prevent collapse
  • Work carried out in or near a shaft or trench deeper than 1.5 metres
  • Work carried out on or near energised electrical installations or services, or
  • An area where there is any movement of powered mobile plant.
