Call Us

South-West Sydney is the state’s busiest construction patch right now. Western Sydney International Airport, the M12 and a long list of arterial upgrades have kicked off a wave of work, from high-clearance logistics warehouses in the Mamre Road Precinct and Kemps Creek to mixed-use towers and medical projects in the Liverpool CBD, plus medium-density housing out at Austral and Leppington.

Each job relies on steel in a different way. Warehouses need long-span universal beams, heavy columns, portal frames and sometimes crane gantry systems. City projects call for transfer decks, cantilevered framing and feature steelwork. Housing needs a steady flow of lintels, beams, T-bars and posts.

The M7, M12, Hume Highway, and Elizabeth Drive are unforgiving, and interstate or overseas steel brings transit delays, shipping bottlenecks, and higher freight bills. Worse, when site conditions don’t match the drawings, a distant supplier can’t send someone out quickly to re-measure or make a modification.

At Steel Fabrication Services, we operate from our production facility at Unit 2/3 York Rd, Ingleburn, right by the M5 and M7. That puts site survey teams and just-in-time deliveries within easy reach of Liverpool, Kemps Creek, Badgerys Creek and Campbelltown, with shorter transit windows, lower freight costs and a team that can respond when the crane is booked and plans change.

Why should you use one team, start to finish?

The best steel packages don’t get passed from detailer to workshop to coating contractor to erector with fingers crossed at every handover. Steel Fabrication Services manages the whole job in-house, which means tighter quality control, fewer surprises and a single point of accountability.

Everything starts with accurate drawings, as our detailing team uses 3D Building Information Modelling to turn architectural layouts and engineering markups into precise shop drawings, connection details and erection plans. The real win is early clash detection: spotting where steel will fight with concrete reinforcement, ductwork or hydraulic services before anything is cut. Fixing a clash on screen is cheap. Fixing it with a torch on site is not.

Once shop drawings are approved, Australian-certified sections go through CNC cutting, drilling, punching and plate profiling. That covers UBs, UCs, PFCs and hollow sections (RHS, SHS and CHS). Certified welders handle connections, including full-penetration butt welds for heavy moment connections. The workshop also builds secondary items: mezzanines, staircases, plant platform supports, balustrades, and custom architectural pieces.

Steel is labelled, bundled and loaded in reverse erection order, so it can be lifted straight off the truck and onto the frame. On site, experienced riggers, crane operators and certified site welders handle structural bolting, torque verification, temporary bracing and final alignment sign-off.

Why we use AS/NZS 5131 as our bible

If you’re procuring steel in Australia, AS/NZS 5131 (Structural steelwork – Fabrication and erection) is the standard that governs how it’s made and installed. It uses four Construction Categories, CC1 to CC4, chosen by the project’s structural engineer based on the consequence of failure, loading conditions and fabrication complexity.

Here’s a simplified version of how it runs:

  • CC1 covers low-consequence items like agricultural sheds, handrails and minor architectural components.
  • CC2 is the default for most commercial, industrial and residential work: distribution warehouses, shopping centres, offices, schools and multi-storey residential under 15 storeys. It means documented quality systems, verified welding procedures, welders qualified to AS/NZS 1554 and material traceability back to mill test certificates.
  • CC3 steps things up for complex or high-consequence structures such as taller towers, hospitals, bridges and crane runways, with full member traceability, welding coordination to AS/NZS ISO 3834-2 and extensive non-destructive testing.
  • CC4 is reserved for critical, extreme-consequence infrastructure.

Essentially, you need to nominate the Construction Category up front in your drawings and specs, and ensure your fabricator can deliver to it. We source sections with full mill test certificates and work to AS/NZS 1554, so certifiers, engineers and building owners get the compliance documentation they need at handover rather than a scramble at the end.

Always get your fabricator involved early

The cheapest time to fix a steel problem is before the tender goes out. Bringing a fabricator in early lets them review constructability, flag unclear connection details or vague finishing specs, and spot value engineering opportunities.

Standardised section sizes, smarter welded connections that cut shop labour, and sensible transportable assembly lengths can all trim package costs without touching structural performance or architectural intent.

It also heads off the dreaded variation claim. Ambiguity in tender documents kills programs and budgets.

What to send for an accurate quote

The more complete your package, the tighter (and faster) your pricing. Ideally, include:

  • Structural drawings (S-series): plans, foundation layouts, beam and column schedules, connection details, holding-down bolt plans and engineering specs.
  • Architectural drawings (A-series): floor plans, sections, elevations and call-outs showing clearances and aesthetic requirements.
  • Project specification: material grades, your AS/NZS 5131 Construction Category, welding quality requirements and NDT schedules.
  • Surface treatment requirements: paint systems, galvanising specs or intumescent fire ratings.
  • Site and program constraints: access limits, crane locations, working hours and proposed sequencing.

Don’t have everything locked in yet? Send what you’ve got. An early conversation is often more useful than waiting for a perfect set.

Ready to talk with a structural steel fabricator Liverpool trusts?

If you’re a builder, head contractor, developer or engineer with a project in Liverpool or the broader South-West Sydney area, getting a quote with Steel Fabrication Services is simple:

  1. Gather your files: drawings, specs and any 3D models in one digital folder.
  2. Submit your project details online. You can upload everything through the form at steelfabservices.com.au/contact so the estimating team can take it from there.
  3. Call 1800 551 296 or email your tender package to info@steelfabricationservices.com.au to discuss timeframes, site access, coating requirements and erection scheduling with an experienced steel specialist.

Liverpool’s building boom isn’t slowing down, and neither should your steel supply. Send your drawings through to Steel Fabrication Services expert team and get a local behind your next project.
